Whitney Elizabeth Houston is a singer who was born in Newark New Jersey on 9th August, 1963. Her parents are gospel singers Cissy Houston(n e Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. Whitney's cousin Dionne Warwick sings as well. When she was a kid she performed in the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. At the age of she turned fifteen, Houston was singing professionally as a backing vocalist with her mother for Chaka Khan's hit song in 1978 Im Every Woman. Later, she provided background vocals for Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls and her mother. The year 1981 saw her begin working as a singer with New York's funk band Material. It was her quality vocal performance with this group that caught the attention of record labels like Arista. Her debut album Whitney Houston was released in 1985, and was the most-seller album by an artist who was a rookie. Several hit singles including Saving All My Love For You How Can I Tell You If It's Good to Love You and The Greatest Love of All were released on the album. They set her up to smash the Beatles record with seven consecutive US numbers one. The album sold US 3,000,000 copies before it reached 25,000,000 copies worldwide. This earned her the first in her 6 Grammy Awards. The Whitney album released in 1987 featuring the tracks I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Where Do Broken Hearts Get to continue her popularity. However, it was The Bodyguard of 1992 that made her one of the biggest-selling performers in the history of music. Though the movie was not highly appreciated and neither was her performance, the music of the film's Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You was able to reach the top spot on both the albums and singles charts in America for months. She sold 44,000,000 copies. In the same year she gave birth to her daughter Bobbi Brown, she got married to Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group.
