Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived into a musical family, 9 August 1993 in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is a cousin and daughter of the singer Dionne. Her mother and she began singing professionally at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark when Whitney was only 15 years old. They performed the back vocals on Chaka Khan's track in 1978 Im Every Woman. In 1981, she worked as a fashion model, and was featured on the Seventeen album cover. She also provided the backing vocals for Lou Rawls and Jermaine. She started as a featured performer for the New York-based New York Funk band Material. Her vocal quality work attracted attention from big record labels like Arista who signed her in 1983. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut single for a new artist in 1985. Many hit songs, including The Greatest Love of All, Saving My Love For You How Will I Know It's Good to Love You as well as The Greatest Love of All were released from the album setting her up to smash the Beatles record with seven consecutive US top 10s. The album sold 3 million copies in its initial album's first year of release in the US and went on to achieve a worldwide sales of 25 million, earning it the very first one of six Grammies. The album Whitney, released in 1987, featuring hit songs How Do Broken Hearts go? and I Wanna Dance With Somebody, built upon her previous success. It was The Bodyguard (1996) that made her one of the best-selling albums in pop music. The Bodyguard's performance as a film as well as its soundtrack weren't well-received however, her Dolly Parton cover I Will Always Love You as well as the accompanying album topped charts around the globe for several months.
